Standard Grade

The resources in this education pack have been developed to encourage development in skills of historical enquiry for students of Standard Grade; Foundation, General and Credit levels.

Resources can be used in the classroom, at home or at the exhibition. They inspire individual as well as group work, and include suggestions for interesting discussions and other stimulating activities.

This resource pack contains:

  • Pieces of the Past
An interactive game to help develop your students’ ICT skills and introduce the importance of a variety of primary sources in developing a reliable, evidence-based understanding of the past.
  • The Hydra and Beyond
PDF worksheet looking closely at visual and written material from The Hydra, magazine of Craiglockhart Military Hospital, to provide a real insight into how officers with shell shock were affected, suffered and recovered during the First World War.
  • Changing Perspective
PDF worksheet where students have to write two newspaper articles on the Battle of the Somme, from two different perspectives – 'for' and 'against'. This will develop skills in information gathering, planning, structuring and writing an article, but also introduce a solid understanding of the use and power of propaganda and differing viewpoints in times of war (and even when we are not at war).
  • Teachers’ Notes
A PDF containing comprehensive notes for teachers with suggestions for additional activities, topics for discussions and further links.

For the PDFs, you will need Adobe Acrobat. Get it now.
