I designed an evaluation plan to examine whether the TESEP approach had an affect on levels of engagement, enjoyment and learner performance. Evaluation methods included learner surveys, a staff/learner liaison meeting, comparison of current and previous assessment results and personal reflection |

“I get to find or investigate other studies which helps me to remember them.” “The teaching method is unique as the teacher knows how to make the class understand the course work” “It is taught in a different way. You are more involved and you are not dictated – so it isn’t boring.” |
The TESEP approach was markedly different from the previous mode of delivery in the sense that a purer constructivist approach was employed, i.e. learners were not “spoon fed” the course content. The results did not indicate any difference in exam success from traditional methods. However, the TESEP principles were extremely successful in terms of learner engagement, motivation and tutor enjoyment. The implementation appeared to have a positive impact on the learners, beyond the unit, as they stated that they found the study skills that they had acquired useful for their other subjects. |
The model would need to be implemented for the duration of the full course to determine whether there is any long-term gain for the learner from this approach. I have seen sufficient evidence however to suggest that, if the approach was implemented for the duration of the full course, there could be an impact on achievement figures.
Modifications to some aspects of the course, for example, participating in the production of handouts led by learner content, and in some cases providing content, to ease time demands, would provide extra time to prepare learners for assessment and lead to improved exam performance.
The approach challenged my teaching practice as preparation and alertness for the duration of every lesson exceeded the demands of traditional teaching methods. However, it is an incredibly satisfying way of facilitating learning that I intend to continue to develop, implement and adapt, to the needs of different learner groups, in my future teaching practice.
