"The aim of the project was that I wanted to help the learners take more responsibility for their learning. I wanted them to develop the skills to become more effective learners so that they were not always relying on the lecturer to give them the information, but that they felt confident to go out and find information for themselves. I think that’s a really important skill to have when you are in the workplace or are going onto higher education, is to be able to have that independence. I also wanted them to become more involved in the learning process and to realise that they don’t always have to take the lecturer’s word for it. They can negotiate methods of learning, they can negotiate parts of their coursework, and how that is achieved, which also I think is very important. I introduced the VLE as a resource in order to aid them to become more effective learners. I didn’t automatically put all the resources onto that for them, I allowed it to be a platform for them to suggest their own resources which were useful to them in their studies, and also to discuss issues that were arising in class. So that was really used as the central tool to achieve the ultimate aim, but obviously the classroom environment was also set up in the same way so that it was a free, open learning environment."
