EURAMP Project Sites

Ile de France - the A6 motorway south of Paris:
The Ile de France test site covers five consecutive on-ramps in a 20-kilometre section of the A6 motorway south of Paris. These five on-ramps, at Ris-Orangis, Grigny, Viry, Savigny and Chily-Mazarin, are on the northbound carriageway of the A6 (the direction towards Paris). Each on-ramp is fully equipped with loop detectors and traffic signals. In EURAMP the main objectives of the field trials are to develop, test and evaluate the traffic impact of isolated and coordinated control strategies.

Also in EURAMP, off-line simulation studies of ramp metering at the "virtual" test site are being carried out, comprising 50 ramp metering locations in a site covering 250km of motorway. For the virtual test site it is intended to investigate and enhance traffic responsive on-ramp metering and motorway to motorway control strategies.

Utrecht (Netherlands) - A2 Maarsen and 3 sites on the A28 North:

The main evaluation of ramp metering in the Utrecht test site will be at the A2 (two-lane on-ramps) Maarssen Oost and Maarssen West. A "two-cars-per-green" (per lane) strategy has been in operation on Maarssen West since 14th November 2003 and on Maarssen Oost since 27th January 2005.

In addition to the main evaluation at Maarssen, an evaluation of traffic safety before and after ramp metering implementation will be made with data from ramps on the A28 North at Soesterberg, Maarn and Leusden Zuid.

Munich (Germany) - A94: The Munich demonstration site is at one of three existing ramp metering locations on the A94 motorway in the east of Munich. This ramp meter controls the traffic leaving from the new trade fair area and a new shopping centre at the junction AS5 Munich-Riem in the outbound direction. The A94 test site will be used within EURAMP to test further ALINEA parameter settings and control strategies as well as the fuzzy based ramp metering algorithms ACCEZZ.

The Ayalon Highway, Tel Aviv (Israel):

The Ayalon Highway crosses the Tel Aviv metropolitan area from north to south and is the busiest highway in Israel, carrying 750,000 vehicles each weekday. Before the EURAMP project ramp metering was not operating on the Ayalon Highway.

Two ramps have been selected for the installation, implementation and demonstration of ramp metering in EURAMP. These are the northbound on-ramp at KKL and the southbound on-ramp at Kibutz Galuyot, where local ramp metering systems have been implemented.
