MSc Blended and Online Education

Edinburgh Napier University is pleased to offer the MSc Blended & Online Education (MSc BOE), designed to give education practitioners a hands-on opportunity to explore technology enhanced approaches for their own teaching and training needs.

Building upon the strengths of Edinburgh Napier’s reputation in applied education, the MSc BOE provides a creative combination of theoretical grounding, conceptual understanding, tailored application and original research related to blended and online education provision. Furthermore, the MSc BOE is recognised by SEDA, and offers individual accreditation in Embedding Learning Technologies for all Pg Cert, Pg Dip and MSc completers.

Whether you are a lecturer or staff developer in Higher or Further Education or employed in a corporate training capacity, the MSc BOE will offer you a fully online opportunity to gain pedagogic understanding, learn new technological skills, and develop resources related directly to your own blended and online learning and teaching needs. You’ll be doing so together with education professionals from a wide range of subject areas, experience and proximity.

The MSc Blended & Online Education is delivered as a fully online programme, with a very high level of visibility and support from tutors in Edinburgh Napier’s virtual learning environment, while also drawing upon emergent web 2.0 technologies to carry out individual and group work learning and teaching activities. Here is a selection of the types of projects that have been carried out by programme participants in the past:

Redesign of a large undergraduate lecture-based course to incorporate online collaborative opportunities for students via a social networking site.
Design and development of an online taster course for teaching staff new to the institutional virtual learning environment.
Critical review and appraisal of one of the MSc BOE's own modules
Creation of a promotional DVD for secondary school leavers considering studying web design and animation.
Evaluative study of student and staff perceptions of technology enhanced teaching and learning approaches in Higher Education
Action research project in a business school around the use of vodcasts to supplement traditional lecture-based lessons
Design and implementation of an innovative, student centred and technology enhanced approach to assessment

In a number of cases our current students have had papers based on their MSc BOE projects accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals or for presentation at international conferences.
